Capsule Tradeshow at NYC Market Week 2014

It’s that time of year again: all of our favorite brands have finished tinkering away on their lines, the samples are set, and now it’s time to sell sell sell like their lives depend on it. That’s right, MARKET WEEK! Thousands of brand reps, buyers, and merchants flocked to New York City last week to show, preview, and buy their Autumn/Winter 2014 collections.

nyc market week 2014

Market Week, however, is a bit of misnomer; all of the major men’s trade shows for New York City happened from January 21-23 but NYC is just a pit stop on the six-week globetrotting circuit many brands use to present their new lines. Many brands came from Berlin via Paris and many more will be in Los Angeles, Copenhagen, Amsterdam, Las Vegas, and Tokyo before their tour is through.

This stop wasn’t an easy one. New York saw over a foot of snow and subzero wind chills on the first day of the shows, which grounded many flights, brought public transportation to a crawl, and put more than one Geobasket-ed goth ninja ass-down on the pavement. But enough inside baseball, let’s get to the clothes.

General Trends

You may remember from my Spring/Summer ’14 recap more washes and non-raw offerings looming on the horizon. They’re still there, but it seems to be toned back a bit as the colder seasons are generally more raw friendly.

The main trend I noticed is that everyone is striving to produce or create their own proprietary fabric. As many of our best known brands enter their tenth-plus season making raw denim jeans, they’ve grown bored or frustrated with the standard offerings from Japanese and American mills.

It used to be just 3sixteen with the claim to exclusive denim as a tiny company, but come this fall Left Field NYC, Tellason, and Baldwin will join their ranks with their own proprietary fabric. It looks to be the next step for brands to distinguish themselves in an increasingly crowded market where everyone is using roughly the same materials. We look forward to seeing who comes up with what proprietary blends next.

The Brands

Naked & Famous and Unbranded

Brandon Svarc and Bahzad Trinos always have a bevy of tricks ready with every new season. They’ve done scratch and sniff denim, glow in the dark denim (for kids too), and even heat-activated color-changing jeans. This season is no different, but their first offering is nothing to joke about–the infamous and hotly anticipated Elephant 4.

N&F Elephant 4

Naked & Famous Elephant series is known for being super dark and super heavy–reminiscent of elephant skin–and this iteration more than lives up to the name. The E4 features 22 Oz. indigo warp over black weft sanforized Japanese selvedge denim, bright contrast yellow stitching, and a 10 Oz. buffalo leather patch. It will be offered in their Weird Guy tapered and Skinny Guy slim tapered fits.

Naked & Famous Elephant 4

Naked & Famous Elephant 4

On the wackier side of things, they’re issuing a spiritual successor of sorts to their Rainbow Core denim with a multicolored weft twill. Although the candy insides won’t fade in, little tufts of colored nep pop through the indigo face of the jean.

Naked & Famous multicolored weft twill

Naked & Famous Sweat pant denim. For the stylish and slovenly.

Sweat pant denim. For the stylish and slovenly.

The novelty show-stopper of this collection though was the reflective denim. You know that shiny material on construction vests or bike clothing? Well Brandon and Bahzad made denim yarns out of it. See Brandon’s “magic trick” below: take a photo of the reflective pair with a flash and all of the other jeans will disappear!

Naked & Famous reflective denim

New things are also brewing on the pair’s entry level label, Unbranded. They’re releasing a new fabric, a 1% spandex 11oz stretch selvedge, and a new fit, the Tight based on the Super Skinny Guy fit. Both are expected this April. They’ve also really upped their game on leather patches.

Japan Blue and Momotaro

Japan Blue and Momotaro

Straight out of Rampuya, Collect Mills and Japan Blue Group denim brands Japan Blue and Momotaro showed up with a variety of new fabrics from their Japanese labs.

Japan Blue knit denim

The most interesting we saw is a “knit denim” that forgoes the typical weaving done on a loom. There’s no selvedge ID on these guys, but they fade and look just like traditional denim plus their interior feels like French terry cloth. Sweat denim, indeed.

Knit Denim

Another of their summer offerings takes their 9oz selvedge chambray fabric and sews it up into jeans. The caste on these is almost iridescent.

Japan Blue 9oz selvedge chambray fabric

They’re innovating on the Momotaro side of things as well.

Tatushi Tabuchi of Momotaro Jeans

Tatushi Tabuchi of Momotaro Jeans

In a similar vein to their Deep Indigo and Grand Indigo denims, they’re releasing a dark natural dyed indigo with a greycaste weft yarn. See the results of Tatushi’s fade below.

Momotaro dark natural dyed indigo, greycaste weft yarn denim

And going one step further from traditional dye types like kakishibu (i.e. persimmon – see Samurai Jeans‘ Kakishibu-Dyed 24 Oz. S5000KA as an example), they have a work shirt dyed in indigo and green tea.

Momotaro indigo and green tea workshirt

3sixteen

3sixteen

3sixteen is also going lighter next season with an 11 Oz. denim, another exclusive from Kuroki Mills. In a more Japanese fashion, they’re offering these jeans once-washed–see the milky indigo runoff on the leather patch above. Andrew says the patches will be added after the wash to avoid that kind of indigo transfer, but I happen to think it looks pretty cool.

3sixteen new donut hardware

The team also updated all of their hardware, opting for vintage donut buttons and unpunched rivets (note the tufty fuzz) this time around.

3sixteen denim lineup

On the non-denim side of the brand, Andrew and Johan are bringing out 3/4 sleeve leisure shirts with coconut buttons. A first for something made this side of the Pacific.

3sixteen 3/4 sleeve leisure shirts with coconut buttons

As much as a season for new things, it’s a resurrection of the old as well. 3sixteen‘s welcoming back flannels and waxed cotton bombers that haven’t been seen in years. These flannels ain’t your typical LL Bean button downs, though, they’re more the Japanese repro style you’d expect from The Flat Head or Iron Heart with thick yarns and huge checks to match.

3sixteen flannel

The 3sixteen bomber, back from the dead.

And we couldn’t not show this pair of lovingly abused ST-100x‘s Andrew had on hand. The darning work on these must’ve taken ages.

Left Field NYC

Andrew Hamilton, Jonny Nichols, and Christian McCann of Left Field NYC

Andrew Hamilton, Jonny Nichols, and Christian McCann of Left Field NYC

The boys from Queens were out in force as Left Field NYC has clarified its vision over the past few seasons into a line of solidly constructed American workwear. This year is no different. Christian McCann and his team continue to discover new and interesting fabrics for their two jean fits.

Left Field NYC Denim Lineup

Now intimately familiar with American and Japanese mills, the team sourced this super neppy green ID denim from the Candiani Mill in Italy.

Neppy green selvedge ID denim

Wanting to branch into their own fabric, Left Field is doing their own dyeing on Cone Mills natural selvedge denim to create their own colors.

Cone Mills natural selvedge denim

And in their knit division, they’ve created a pair of sweatpants out of the same 18 Oz. indigo terry used in their iconic sweatshirt. They’re all ready to go for a SuFu competition so the fades on these are going to be stretched to the limit.

Left Field NYC 18 Oz. indigo terry sweatpants

In sweatshirts, they’ve got a new hoodie with an old twist. Like old Champion sweats, they stitched the hood on top of an already finished crew neck–that’s versatility in manufacturing, right there.

Big John

Japan’s first denim brand arrived with largely their same strong collection.

In jackets, however, they’ve adapted the unsanforized shrink to fit denim from their flagship Rare jeans into a shrink-to-fit trucker jacket.

Big John shink-to-fit trucker jacket

And the ongoing collaboration between Big John and artist Rockin’ Jelly Bean has entered its third and final iteration. Where the last collab focused on the denim of the Beach Boys in the early 60s, this pair aims to emulate the jeans of the 60s and early 70s Woodstock era rock and roll. They come raw as well as in a super washed out vintage cast.

Big John x Rockin' Jelly Bean

Another standout was this MA-1 jacket with nylon sleeves and a black denim body. Not sure how/if it will fade, but the details and the feel were spot on.

Ardent readers will recognize these jeans from our fade friday last july. Well they belong to Big John designer Ryuchi Adachi, and he’s put in a good bit more wear on them.

Tellason

You probably know the 12oz Cone Mills indigo duck canvas on the jeans in the photo below, but what you probably don’t know is that Cone Mills has discontinued the fabric and Tellason has developed an exclusive run. As such, they’re using a lot of it!

Tellason 12oz Cone Mills indigo duck canvas

Their chore coat has it,

and their trucker has it too.

They’ve also produced this collaboration vest with raincoat maker Freeman Seattle. Although one may question the rain stopping power of a semi-waterproof vest, it looks pretty neat.

Eat Dust

Our old friends Keith and Rob of Eat Dust are still raising hell and making jeans in Copenhagen. This season they’re moving into footwear as well as women’s denim.

Eat Dust

But they aren’t making any compromises for the ladies; Keith and Rob are using the same 14oz 100% cotton denim they use on their men’s jeans. That’s right, no stretch!

Their infamous “dirty dozen” camo is also back this season on bags, jackets, vests, and this amazing poncho, which when combined with three other ponchos can create a small tent!

Baldwin

Baldwin Denim

Matt Baldwin and his Kansas City crew have been racking up acclaim from the likes of GQ, Esquire, and Vogue. Despite the mainstream acceptance, they still put out jeans that will satisfy any denim nerd. After four years of testing out pretty much every mill and denim out there, Baldwin has created their own exclusive denim with the collaboration of Kuroki Mills. It’s a 14 Oz. sanforized black line selvedge that they’re using throughout their line see below:

They’re also doubling down on washes, introducing a new black resin wash.

Dickies 1922 returned with largely the same collection but with one new standout–this apron, cut across the full width of a selvedge 2×1 denim bolt.

Lee 101

Lee‘s heritage collection, 101, is also sticking with their washes. They’ve developed a new technique however, that minimizes the amount of water used in distressing their jeans to one liter or less.

Lee 101

But don’t worry, you can still get ‘em raw. They’ve also gone back to producing their denim with their original gold-line selvedge ID.

Natural Selection Denim

Natural Selection Denim

UK based brand, Natural Selection, brought their “Darwinism of denim” collection to New York. Their philosophy is that only the denim you choose to wear will achieve the wear needed to evolve so their environmental bent is only appropriate. They use organic and natural materials wherever possible including potato starch to set the rigidity of their jeans.

Natural Selection

Below is a jacket from their “No Evil/Live On” collection, a select run of discontinued Cone Mills denim they’ve sat on for years, and their designer John Park in a brand new pair of their tapered fit.

Apolis

The indigo obsessed Apolis chosen material for next winter is appropriately wool. They’ve taken the success they’ve had with their indigo wool chore coat and created a shirt jacket and dress pants to match.

New Brands

Fundamental Agreement Luxury

Fundamental Agreement Luxury may sound like a philosophical day spa, but it’s actually the name of a heritage Japanese denim company that has been making jeans in Tokyo for the past eight years. Only this season have they made their move to conquer the rest of the world.

Designer Gaku Tsuyoshi of Fundamental Agreement Luxury

Designer Gaku Tsuyoshi of Fundamental Agreement Luxury

They offer a variety of fits from skinny to heritage straight but all bear their trademark Shinto bell next to the left pocket. Don’t worry about sounding like a lost cat, though, it’s easily removable.

Fundamental Agreement Luxury Shinto Bell

The price point is dead on. The jeans milled and produced entirely in Japan will retail for under $200.00.

Fundamental Agreement Luxury BoothThe denim felt crisp and evolves beautifully, as Gaku’s fades below demonstrate. And after operating in Japan for nearly a decade, they will have worked out all the kinks that come with designing and manufacturing jeans. Add to that the mid-tier price and I’m very interested to see Fundamental make the transition stateside.

FDMTL

Shockoe Denim

On the domestic front is Shockoe Denim. Operating out of Richmond, Virginia for just over a year now, Shockoe sources their denim from Cone Mills and Japan’s Collect Mills while manufacturing everything out of their Richmond showroom.

Shockoe Denim

The jeans show many vintage details like single-needle stitching and double-clasp rivets exposed on the back pockets.

Shockoe Denim Single Needle Stitching

But just because they’re going vintage in construction doesn’t mean they’re slaves to old fabrics. See below two of their picks from Collect; a neppy blanket denim and an incredibly slubby 18oz-er (read up on our previous article outlining the difference between nep and slub).

That about wraps it up. What do you think about what’s on offer for denim in AW14? Sound off in the comments below and be sure to check back in for our continuing coverage on the leather goods at the show!

The Momotaro x Massdrop Mixup

One of Massdrop's potential jean drops

One of Massdrop’s potential jean drops

If you think vintage label Momotaro for $170.00 sounds too good to be true, you’re right. But that was almost the reality for almost 200 users of the group buy website, Massdrop, before Momotaro shut down the deal.

Massdrop is a young tech startup that organizes wholesale buys of a single product for a heavily discounted price. Massdrop has facilitated “drops” in mechanical keyboards, car parts, 3D printers, and most recently, raw denim.

Users create polls featuring a variety of products, the community then votes for their favorite item, and Massdrop contacts the vendor to arrange a wholesale deal. Massdrop posts the item with a week deadline to collect orders then places the order with the vendor, receives the goods in one large shipment, and distributes them to their users.

A recent raw denim poll on the site.

A recent raw denim poll on the site.

The winners of two recent “Raw Denim” polls were Momotaro 702s and Japan Blue 0401s. Massdrop contacted the Rampuya & Co. (the umbrella company for Momo and JB) and set a rate of $179.99 for the Momo’s and $110.00 for the JB’s–considerably below their MSRPs of $295 and $200, respectively. The postings garnered over 300 orders total and Massdrop sent them in.

One of Massdrop's sample photos for the Momotaro 702

One of Massdrop’s sample photos for the Momotaro 702

And here’s where things got tricky. Rampuya responded that they would still fulfill the JB orders, but that $179.99 was too low for Momotaro and they were canceling the offer. Massdrop wired money for the JB order and scrambled to salvage the Momotaro jeans but set a hard deadline for refunding their users’ money if they could not reach an agreement.

That deadline passed on February 21 and Massdrop issued a full refund plus a credit to any future purchases on the site. In the same time period, Japan Blue bounced back the money from Massdrop’s wire transfer and said it wouldn’t ship that order either, leaving several hundred potential customers denimless and disappointed.

We spoke with Momotaro General Manager Tatsushi Tabuchi who said that the issue stems from miscommunication. In an email he wrote,

They would sell our denim [at] the discount price without sufficient explanation to us. For example, 0702 was $170. It is too [much of a] discount. This price is at a price that was clearly wrong, we were not able to accept [it]. Be[ing] sold at a price too low will lower the brand value. Cause all thing were happened by what they sold without a sufficient explanation to us [sic].

Tabuchi believed they would be selling the denim wholesale to Massdrop but was unaware they would be offering that price to consumers as well, something that would hurt Momotaro‘s brand value as they are rarely offered on sale. When other American Momotaro retailers began to complain about the discounted price, Momotaro realized what was actually happening and backed out of the order as quickly as possible.

Tabuchi Tatsushi representing Momotaro at Capsule Man in January

Tabuchi Tatsushi representing Momotaro at Capsule Man in January

Massdrop founder and CEO, Steve El-Hage, agrees that communication was a big problem in the drop, specifically citing the barriers created by differences in language and location. El-Hage admits this was not only their first raw denim order but also their first with a Japanese company and they didn’t have a translator on staff or a complete understanding of Japanese business practices. So when things with the drop started looking shaky they tried to act quickly or lose credibility with their newfound raw denim customers.

“We tried to be as transparent and honest with our customers about what happened.” El-Hage explains, “The worst thing would have been to drag this on for months so we set a hard deadline for a refund after one week, and we unfortunately had to follow through on it.” To prevent issues like this from arising in the future, Massdrop now requires vendors to sign contracts before each sale is posted on the site and they will be using an intermediary agency for future deals with Japanese companies.

Despite the outcome, El-Hage says he still had a very positive experience with the raw denim community, “When we had to tell them about the canceled shipment, we thought they [the buyers in the drop] were going to rip us apart, but everyone’s been really supportive and understanding.” And it looks like Massdrop has no plan to leave raw denim anytime soon as they just finished two recent drops with American jeans makers, Rising Sun & Co. and Taylor Stitch.

El-Hage even said he’d be open for another deal with Momotaro, including the honoring the 702 drop. “At the end of the day,” he says, “I just want to get people their jeans.”

What do you think about how each company reacted in the Massdrop/Momotaro situation? Do you think buying wholesale from the manufacturer in drops like these is an attractive way to buy jeans? And what effects do you think this will have on raw denim retailers and manufacturers as a whole? Let us know in the comments below.

Jesper Remmerswaal, Tulp Jeans – One Man Brand

Based in the Netherlands, Tulp Jeans is a small operation run by Jesper Remmerswaal from a room at the back of his cozy apartment in the charming town of Delft. His passion for raw denim was instilled originally by his brother who taught him the secrets of the blue fabric and inspired him to push himself for more knowledge about jeans. As kids, they experimented with sandpapering the jeans, making holes on the fabric, repairing them, and even using bleach and paint, pretty much all that they could throw at the jeans to see what results and effects on the fabrics they could achieve.

tulup side

It was this strong curiosity to know and learn that inspired Remmerswaal to study fashion with an emphasis on the design and construction of jeans. He was able to procure an old industrial sew machine to practice at home and was quickly became fascinated by the allure of denim and vintage sewing machines.

Tulup Folded

The motivation that pushed him to create Tulp Jeans was the drive make a pair of jeans with a typical Dutch flavour. And what better way to express the spirit of the Netherlands than with with their famous flower, the tulip? After brainstorming he decided to use the tulip as not only an image but also the name for his brand and the characteristic Dutch shape can be seen in the back pockets and in the fifth-pocket.

Tulup Fits

Tulup 32

For his jeans he uses Japanese denim, sourced the Collect Mill, same mill as Momotaro’s denim, though he has also expanded recently into experimentation with American denim. His preference has been to use a minimum of 14oz denim, as in his experience it gives the finest works. For the inside, he has always have found it annoying that pockets bags broke within the first year of use so he came up with the idea to use a sturdy canvas to the point that now the linings of his jeans could almost outlast the denim itself! He also like to place the rivets in an old fashion way, not with a machine but manually hammering them in by hand.

Remmerswaal has collected through the years a small but impressive collection of industrial sewing machines, giving the jeans the authentic touch that many denim heads strive for. He works with a Union Special 35800 feed off arm chainstich, one Reece101 keyhole machine, an Union Special 6900 Beltloop machine and an Union Special 39200 overlock.

tulp5

Left, Reece machine Right, Union Special

tulp6

When asked about the future of Tulp Jeans, Remmerswaal says that he would like to have a production label that makes his brand available in various stores in the Netherlands and perhaps abroad. He also aspires to open an atelier where people can walk in and give their own preferences for a custom made jeans service, choosing denim, rivets, buttons, coloured yarns and more.

“The market for jeans is very big in the Netherlands. Wearing raw denim is increasingly beginning to grow. I think that for the raw denim lovers, smaller jeans brands who design until the final result with passion are more appreciated than big ones that are produced in an industrial way in factories” says Remmerswaal.

Tulup

Tulp Jeans are still a small brand trying to find their own place on the raw denim market, the competition is harsh and there have been more than a few casualties. That said, the passion reflected in the product is something that is not easily recreated and Remmerswaal captures this passion and puts it in every single yard, rivet, and stitch. You can find out a little more at Tulp Jeans as well as on Facebook.

The Complete Guide to Okayama Jeans Street – Part I

$

Most denim heads understand that Japanese denim comes from Okayama. Maybe not that many know about Kojima, and probably even less are familiar with Jeans Street. We recently met with Tatsushi Tabuchi, General Manager at Rampuya & Co, mother company of Momotaro Jeans and Japan Blue Jeans, who gave us an exclusive tour of Kojima’s Jeans Street.

Since there is little information available in English about the street, we’ll start with a little historical background of Kojima before giving you concrete details such as transportation, opening hours, stores present etc. Please note that we won’t write about all the stores present. We’ll focus on the stores that drew our attention instead. For a complete list of the stores please refer to the map below.

Kojima Jeans Street Map

Kojima Jeans Street map

The history of Japanese denim

Unless you read Japanese, it’s tough finding information on the history of Japanese denim before the 50s. In fact the roots of Japanese denim go as deep as the 16th century. Back then, the Daimyo of the Okayama prefecture, Ukita Hideie, started large construction projects, including what’s called “land reclamation from sea”. It consists in getting rid of the water from shallow areas to create new lands. That’s how Kojima, literally “small island”, was born. Since you can’t cultivate rice in salty water, people started cultivating cotton, which is salt resistant.

From then the Okayama prefecture gained a strong reputation for its production of sanada-himo (traditional ribbons), socks, and cloth used for kokura-obiji (traditional kimono belt) and hakama (traditional Samurai pants). Then in the late 19th century, foreigners started coming to Japan, bringing in a new fashion. Eventually Japanese traditional clothes became less popular. The demand decreased, threatening thousands of jobs. The Okayama textile industry had to look for something else to produce.

Sanada himo

Sanada himo, courtesy of the blog Japanese Textiles.

Fortunately, the end of the 19th century is also when Japanese universities implemented uniforms, shortly followed by the whole scholar system. Since school uniforms aren’t following any trends, this was the safest option. Then after WWII came another threat: synthetic fiber. Again, they needed to find something else to produce. Since American soldiers had brought denim with them during WWII, and since denim is made of cotton, that’s the product the industry went for, leading to the birth of Big John in 1965.

What about Jeans Street?

Until around 40 years ago, Kojima was an animated city, and Jeans Street–originally called “Ginza Street”–was packed with merchants and shoppers. With the rural exodus, youngsters started leaving town, heading for bigger cities like Osaka or Tokyo, which turned the small neighborhood into what the Japanese call a shutter town. That’s until jean makers gathered and took the initiative to create Jeans Street, a human project that gives life back to a deserted street, providing hundreds of people with jobs!

Transportation

Let’s assume you don’t live in Japan, and even if you do, let’s assume you don’t own a car. First step: go to Kojima Station. If you’re staying at either Osaka, Okayama, or Kurashiki, Japanese trains are well organized and indications are very clear so that shouldn’t be too complicated.

When you arrive at Kojima station, you have two options to go to Jeans Street. Near from the exit you will see a bunch of cabs. Take one and you’ll get to the street within 10 minutes for around $12. Or, if you want to enjoy the full experience you should ride the Jeans Street Bus. For around $1.60, go to the stop called “Nozakikekyuutaku” (野崎家旧宅), located in Jean’s Street’s North Area. Be careful with the timetable as the bus only runs from 9:40AM to 3:50PM. For more info check the schedule here.

It’s no surprise that the tour starts with local champion Momotaro Jeans, the first store you see when you get off the bus. Everything in the street is dedicated to denim, even the vending machines next to the stores have been decorated after the brand.

The store is stretched between three sections. What you first see when getting inside the store is the Momotaro Jeans section. The second and third sections are dedicated to indigo label Rampuya, one of the labels by the same company that makes Momotaro and Japan Blue Jeans. You will find there, among other things, their $2,000 all-natural denim jeans, accessories, and traditional kimonos.

Next is Japan Blue, often confused with Pure Blue Japan. It’s a brand owned by the same company that makes Momotaro and Rampuya. The concept is slightly different, as it emphasizes more on current fashion and fits, whereas Momotaro is more vintage inspired. The brand focuses almost exclusively on bottoms: jeans or chinos of various shapes and colors. The store is built inside a traditional house and beautifully decorated.

For the fathers and husbands, this is a must check, as it has some cool items for women and kids. The assortment isn’t that huge but if you want your partner to wear denim and still look feminine, then you’ll find what you need here. Even if you don’t have kids it’s a cool place to get souvenirs for the parents you know at home.

Denim ice cream

No, don’t worry this ice cream doesn’t taste like denim, in fact it’s blueberry flavored. This is yet another demonstration on how extreme the Japanese can get with their passions. The ice cream shop is operated from the first floor of someone‘s house, so there’s no guarantee they’ll be open when you go, but you can probably count on it during key holidays and tourism peaks of the year such as Golden Week.

5 Lightweight Raw Denim Jeans for Summer

$

Lightweight jeans have begun to catch the attention of denim heads throughout the northern hemisphere. As the temperature and humidity levels continue to climb, it is just too hot for most people to power through with heavy jeans. Sure, readers of Rawr Denim are far less likely to ditch the denim for bermuda shorts, but even the hardcore can only take so many days of sauna-like leg sweats.

We recently explored a few lighter offerings: the Naked & Famous Natural Indigo Selvedge, the Folta & Co. 027-2x, and the 3sixteen 12 Oz. 101x. Continuing along this vein, here are five more lightweight raw denim jeans for summer. Each is under 12 Oz. and has its own distinct personality.

Momotaro 10 Oz. Lot 0305-97

momo

Few companies carry the same brand pedigree as Momotaro. From seed to final stitch, this peach-loving brand does everything in house. Weighing in at 10 oz., Lot 0305-97 is one of the lightest weight and most affordable denims they’ve ever produced.

With an indigo warp and weft, the denim is beautifully solid shade of blue. Proper dedication to these should lead to some quite distinct fades. The lack of white weft also makes the orange and yellow contrast stitching – not to mention the pink inseam – really stand out, while the low tension sanforized fabric makes for minimal break-in. Momotaro tops it off with a suede patch and antiqued copper rivets.

Available at Blue Owl for $255

Naked & Famous Pineapple Selvedge Chambray

naked

The lightest pair on this list, at 8 oz., is also by far the most unorthodox. Taking a cue from Sugar Cane, Naked & Famous has produced a jean that uses 80% cotton and, you guessed it, 20% pineapple fibers. This should prove beneficial during inevitable bouts of perspiration.

Coming in all of N&F’s fits, these will likely have the shortest break-in period of any non-stretch jean you ever purchase. Due to their chambray selvedge nature, these have a light blue color that is almost grey, heavily contrasted by a yellow selvedge line. On the other hand, fading will likely be less drastic than standard raws. Other features found here are customary to most of Naked & Famous denim, such as silver donut buttons, a selvedge coin pocket, and the brand’s pop art female patch in black leather.

Available at Tate & Yoko for $180

Studio D’Artisan D1596

sdaIf you’re looking for a classic offering to brave the heat in, something from Studio D’Artisan is always a good choice. After decades of utilizing the same original factory they used for the first pair, one of Japan’s OGs has formed a close relationship with its manufacturers. This ensures every jean has a beautiful level craftsmanship that consistently carries out each of the flying pigs’ visions true to form.

The D1596 uses single tonal stitching on a slim-straight fit, tapering slightly from the knee down. Using pure Indigo dye has left it a slightly lighter hue than the darkest of indigo raws out there, while the all white selvedge line is clean and minimalist. Finally, the copper rivets and deerskin leather patch will age as gracefully as the denim itself. It’s already washed once, so little shrinkage should occur. At 11 Oz. this pair is the heaviest on the list.

Available at Blue in Green for $245

United Dry Goods Black/Black Selvedge

united

United Stock Dry Goods aims to make high quality and simple garments at a more affordable price. The latter, at the very least, holds true, as these are the cheapest denim featured. Despite only a couple of years under their belt, the company has begun to develop a solid reputation amongst fashion pundits.

Featured in both their Slight and Narrow cuts, the Black/Black Selvedge is the perfect denim for anyone looking for the summer murdered-out look. The only thing that isn’t black on this 9oz. denim is the red selvedge line, a nice subtle accent.

Available at Blue Owl for $170

Levi’s Vintage Clothing 1920s 201 Jeans Rigid

201

Lastly, for the true repro fan looking for something special, Levi’s Vintage Clothing’s 201 is right up your alley. LVC faithfully reproduces its parent company’s original products to the last detail.

The 201, which was originally offered as a more affordable option to the 501, is a loose, relaxed 10.5oz. Cone Mills denim that comes from a curious transition period for denim–belts were becoming more popular but had yet to completely replace the suspender. Consequently, the 201 sports both the buttons and loops. Other features include a paper denim patch, high curved arcuates, and cinch buckle on the rear of the waistband.

Available at Unionmade for $275

Arcuates–sometimes shortened to arcs–are the decorative stitching found on jeans’ back pockets. The classic Levi’s arcs have spawned countless brands creating their own pocket modification to make their brand stand apart.

Problem is, there are so many arcs now it’s hard to tell them from each other. We’ve laid out some of the biggest brands in raw denim along with their arcuates as a reference below. We hope it’s exhaustive, but if it’s not, please let us know anything we missed in the comments below!

The Complete Raw Denim Patch Collection

The little details that go into a pair of jeans can often be overlooked by the less discerning consumer. Only the most passionate denimheads care about chainstitches, selvedge lines, and tucked waistbands. But there are two design details few can overlook: the back pocket arcuate–which we highlighted recently–and the design of a brand’s patch. These allow for a designer’s artistic spirit to make a statement, one that might convince or deter a consumer from purchasing their creation.

With this in mind, we’ve assembled a near complete raw denim patch collection of the brands we know and love. Over a hundred raw denim-producing brands have been included, spanning one man operations to enormous denim manufacturers. Some reproduce the old guard’s patches to a near infringing level, while others use a completely original design, while some forgo the patch altogether.

We are only displaying one patch per brand due to space constraints, but many brands have numerous patches and some–like Sugar Cane or Kamikaze Attack–have a different patch for each model. We’ve picked the patches that we feel are most representative of the brand. As always, sound off in the comments section below with any favorite brands we may have overlooked.

Blue Owl x Momotaro 8 Jeans – Just Released

$

Momotaro and Blue Owl are back at it again. Just yesterday, they released the eighth iteration of their ongoing series of collaborations, and this one doesn’t disappoint.

The BOM008 jeans tip the scales at 18oz., a bit more than Momo’s usual offerings and should be a good fall weight. The fabric itself is a deep indigo warp with a dark black sulphur-dyed weft. They’ve also reprise the “stealth stripes” they first used on the BOM006 instead of the usual Momotaro going to battle stripes on the back pocket. They’ve sewn strips of kangaroo leather into the pocket lining so the stripes will show up subtly with fading in instead of vice versa. The jeans will be available in both the brand’s skinny and tapered fits.

And if the fabric in pants form doesn’t strike your fancy, Blue Owl’s already announced the next collaboration will be a Type 2 style jacket in a similar heavy denim. The BOM009 is expected to release in September.

Details

  • Name: Momotaro x Blue Owl BOM008
  • Weight: 18 Oz.
  • Fit: Skinny fit and Tapered fit
  • Denim: 100% cotton Collect Mills deep indigo x sulphur weft selvedge denim
  • Other details
    • Custom Momotaro peach rivets
    • Peach pink inseam stitching
    • Lined back pockets with stealth “battle stripes”
  • Available at: Blue Owl Workshop for $295

Momotaro x Indigoskin Lot2: Just Released

$

This coming fall Take5 will be producing a collaboration between Thai brand Indigoskin and famed Japanese denim brand, Momotaro. Based in Siam, Indigoskin infuses a little Thai flavor into their jeans by incorporating traditional Thai fabrics and patterns into their denim. If you haven’t heard of them before, get familiar because their jeans can produce some extreme fades like this pair from a past Fade Friday.

It’s the second collaboration between the two brands and will be limited to just 100 pairs. The denim is made using an unsanforized Zimbabwe cotton this time weighing in at a meaty 18oz., so expect to see some high contrast fades. It comes in Momotaro’s 0701 fit, and though their first collab utilized Thai fabrics, this one uses Japanese Furoshiki indigo dyed fabric for lining the yoke. You’ll also find hidden rivets with Momotaro’s ‘battle stripes’ arcuate located on the left rear pocket (again in a unique vintage fabric) opposite the more subtle Indigoskin arcuate.

25 pairs will be available for pre-order on Monday, July 14 through the Indigoskin store and another 25 pairs will be available at Take5 in Bangkok. You can find the 50 other pairs at the Indigoskin website when they officially drop in September.

DETAILS

  • Name: Momotaro x Indigoskin Lot2
  • Fabric: Unsanforized Zimbabwe cotton raw indigo selvedge denim
  • Weight: 18 oz.
  • Fit: 0701 Slim Tapered
  • Details:
    • Japanese Furoshiki indigo dyed fabric lining the yoke.
    • Exclusive Momotaro fabric pocket bags.
    • Triple-needle stitched yoke seam.
    • Hidden rivets.
    • Each button has a unique design (no repeating designs).
    • Sheepskin leather patch.
    • Peach colored inseam and selvedge line.
  • MSRP: 15,900 Thai Baht or ~ $495 USD at Indigoskin Store and Take5.

NYC Market Week SS15 Recap Pt. 3 – Brand Harder

$
0
0

Our march through Spring Summer 15′s Market Week continues with today’s stop at the Capsule Show. See our earlier updates from Kingpins and Liberty Fairs to get up to speed.

Capsule has long been a mainstay in tradeshow season as they were one of the first shows to connect small, high-end, menswear labels with their retailers. This stop filled the exhibition space at Basketball City nearly to capacity with over a hundred brands showing.

Left Field

New York’s own Left Field had a couple new fabrics on display, like the below 10oz. 2×1 from Toyoshima.

NYC Market SS15 - 093

It’s got a great neppy face and a subtle dark weft for a denim that light. They’re planning on running it in both their Chelsea and Greaser jean fits as well as their Miner chino.

NYC Market SS15 - 091

They’re also putting out more fabrics in their Flight Jacket, the one below is wool blanket from Woolrich that’s based on a mil-spec weave from the Civil War.

NYC Market SS15 - 098

And experimentation continues with garment and piece dyeing fabrics in the twills and canvases on their chinos.

NYC Market SS15 - 097

As do their exploits in yarn-dyed indigo knits. The sweat below is an indigo knit version of a sample we saw this winter with a hood attached over a standard crewneck, the same way Champion did it in the 1940s.

NYC Market SS15 - 096

NYC Market SS15 - 095

Christian McCann and Andrew Hamilton of Left Field

And another new development is their custom chainstitch embroidery service. They’ve managed to find the nearly impossible pair of a working chainstitch embroidery machine as well as someone who actually knows how to operate it. Left Field can now put any design, name, or pattern you want onto any of their products. Check the LF logo below.

NYC Market SS15 - 094

Big John

Japan’s first denim brand Big John is back on the scene with a new patch and a new fit. The Super Skinny slims it down to well below a seven-inch leg opening on a standard size 32. The super tight cut, however, is only feasible in a stretch denim.

NYC Market SS15 - 099

On fabrics, they’ve come up with a lighter indigo denim that starts out the same electric blue that normally comes after a few months of fading.

NYC Market SS15 - 100

And they’ve released their flagship shrink-to-fit Rare denim as a jacket. See a nearly year-old sample next to one that’s brand new below.

NYC Market SS15 - 104

NYC Market SS15 - 103

Naked & Famous

Looking through Naked & Famous collection each season can be like opening presents on Christmas morning. The majority of it is expected like the fits and the general fabric types that carry over from the last season, but there are a couple mixed in there that just completely knock your socks off.

NYC Market SS15 - 164

Brandon Svarc and Bahzad Trinos

Here’s this season’s “big present”:

NYC Market SS15 - 106

The Tokushima Hand Dyed Weird Guy is probably one of the most interesting and exotic denims we’ve ever come across. The fabric combines hank-dyeing and natural plant indigo–two of the most labor and material intensive dyeing techniques–into one textile.

NYC Market SS15 - 108

They’re then woven at a ridiculously low tension to create an incredibly slubby and irregular fabric that has just as much texture as it has color depth. But don’t expect it to come cheap–N&F plans to make only 18 of these jeans for $900 each retail.

NYC Market SS15 - 107

Other standouts included this lightweight stretch slub that still captures a great deal of the depth and texture you see in full cotton heavier weight jeans. The sub-$200 price and the stretch makes these an accessible introduction to more irregular fabric types.

NYC Market SS15 - 115

NYC Market SS15 - 114
Another showstopper was this denim whose yarns are spun with copper fibers, giving the fabric a sparkly metallic sheen.

NYC Market SS15 - 110

NYC Market SS15 - 109

Eat Dust

Belgium’s motorcycle duo Keith and Rob from Eat Dust have taken cues from the silver screen for this season’s collection.

NYC Market SS15 - 120

The cult film The Warriors (1979) depicts a wide variety of goofy looking New York street gangs, and this shirt is Eat Dust’s homage to the Baseball Furies.

NYC Market SS15 - 116

NYC Market SS15 - 117

They’ve also added sleeves to their denim vests to make denim jackets for both men’s and women’s lines.

NYC Market SS15 - 119

NYC Market SS15 - 118

Baldwin Denim

Not much has changed with the denim in Kansas City. If you thought their patch couldn’t get any more minimalistic, they’ve proven you wrong by ditching the triple stitch detail and opting for bold block letters instead.

NYC Market SS15 - 122

They’ve stuck with their proprietary blend black-line selvedge from Kurabo that we saw last season.

NYC Market SS15 - 121

There’s also a surprising amount of variation between the stitching on their back pockets.

NYC Market SS15 - 123

Japan Blue

Rampuya Co.’s experimental/entry level line continues to impress. Every season looks stronger than the last, and it appears like they’ll soon eclipse the company’s flagship, Momotaro, if they haven’t already.

As we mentioned in our earlier textile coverageJapan Blue is under the same umbrella as denim weaver Collect Mills. They’re definitely making the most of their access to an in-house weaver as almost every item we saw was made of an exclusive and incredibly inventive fabric.

NYC Market SS15 - 124

This first jean uses cotton from the west African country of Côte d’Ivoire. Most cotton used in high end denim usually comes from  Zimbabwe due to its exceptionally long staple, but the Ivory Coast’s medium staple has proven to be a hard-wearing fiber that gives denim a slight tan coloration and an incredibly soft hand.

They’ve marked the collaboration with a JB Cd’ back pocket tab as well as a split selvedge line that’s half redline, half orange/white/green to mimic the Ivory Coast’s national flag.

NYC Market SS15 - 125

Like Big John, they’ve also come up with a lighter, eye-popping electric blue.

NYC Market SS15 - 127

And if you were a fan of their 16.7oz. Monster denim, you’re in luck. Below is the Military Monster, the next iteration in the series, which features the same deep indigo warp yarn, but with a dark drab olive weft made from a mil-spec yarn.

NYC Market SS15 - 133

In jackets, they’ve spun up an indigo cotton terry cloth and turned it into a Type III.

NYC Market SS15 - 131

This fabric is incredibly light and stretchy, and in a pinch could probably mop up at least a liter of water. It’s also available in standard indigo/white 14oz. denim, if you’re looking for for something more traditional.

NYC Market SS15 - 132

But if tradition’s not your thing, then check out these cool pants!

NYC Market SS15 - 128

The ultra tweedy fabric looks like someone accidentally spilled Lucky Charms all over the loom and it’s amazing.

NYC Market SS15 - 129

Momotaro

On the other hand, Rampuya’s mainline tends more towards the conservative end of the spectrum.

NYC Market SS15 - 148

There are no new denims this time around, but some of the previous one-off fabrics were received well enough that they will now be regularly included in the line. Like blue weft denim as well as the heavyweight 18oz. slub.

NYC Market SS15 - 145

NYC Market SS15 - 144

They’ve continued their indigo-dyed knits and sweats and wabash indigo shirts.

NYC Market SS15 - 147

NYC Market SS15 - 150

And introduced a couple more chambray shirting fabrics as well as 70s mountaineering inspired flannels.

NYC Market SS15 - 151

untitled event - 263

And they’re getting into the long wallet game.

NYC Market SS15 - 149

Soulive

Rampuya’s also rolling out a third brand called Soulive, that will focus more on the wabi-sabi patchwork peasant aesthetic that brands like Kapital and visvim do oh so well. The fabric choices and detailing aren’t firing at the same level as the previously stated brands, but Soulive is also aiming at a lower price point.

NYC Market SS15 - 142

The check on this indigo flannel looks completely on point.

NYC Market SS15 - 134

As do many of their accents and construction details.

NYC Market SS15 - 140

NYC Market SS15 - 137
NYC Market SS15 - 138

But the patchwork embroidery leaves something to be desired, especially after we’ve seen it done better by Koromo and Kapital.

NYC Market SS15 - 136

NYC Market SS15 - 135

Yuketen/Monitaly

Yuki Matsuda is a man of many talents. He makes shoes (Yuketen), bags (Epperson Mountaineering), and apparel (Monitaly) all under his Meg Company in Los Angeles. All three were on display.

NYC Market SS15 - 152

No slave to tradition, Yuki likes to incorporate a variety of styles and cultures into his designs. These leather soled sandals are a winning combination of Italian leisure and Mexican huarache.

NYC Market SS15 - 155

These slip-ons seem to evoke all of the fun and relaxation of cowboy boots but without the shitkicker attitude.

NYC Market SS15 - 153

And I may be going out on a limb here, but these mocs seem to represent an affinity for surfing.

NYC Market SS15 - 154

Designs are just as playful on the Monitaly side. This indigo chore coat seems a cross between early twentieth-century workwear and marching band uniforms.

NYC Market SS15 - 158

He does jeans as well. The denim is made from your standard 13oz. Cone Mills but takes design cues from Wrangler.

NYC Market SS15 - 157

Seven belt loops plus some M-shaped back pocket arcuates that look suspiciously like upside-down Ws…

NYC Market SS15 - 156

Tanner Goods

Tanner Goods has literally made their mark on many American denim brands by producing their patches. Their core line of leather goods has expanded slowly and deliberately for the better part of a decade. Slow and deliberate because once they release something, it tends to stay released as a permanent piece of the collection.

Momotaro 0305-18 and 0305-18B – Just Announced

$

Set to release early this month are a couple of new models from famed Japanese denim house Momotaro Jeans. The 0305-18 is a heavyweight at 18 oz., but unlike other denim in the same weightclass, the 03015-18 jean is made of Zimbabwean cotton which is known for its naturally long staples resulting in a softer, easier feel.

They use an all-cotton thread for the sewing as well as a sheep-skin suede patch which is actually stitched with the waistband simultaneously rather than being sewn onto the waistband after the fact. They’ve made it in what they describe as a “tight taper” fit but they’ve also made the jean in a “natural taper” fit, the 0605-18. Other details include their signature peach-colored selvedge and inseam.

If you’re looking for something a little darker, Momotaro is also releasing their 0308-18B. It has all the same details as the 0305-18, but is made with an 18 oz. denim with an indigo warp and a black weft, also in Zimbabwean cotton. The resulting fades will be more intense and not something you see everyday.

DETAILS

  • Name: Momotaro 0305-18

  • Fabric: Zimbabwean cotton selvedge denim
  • Fit: Tight taper
